Is this common hoptree? It met the description in the Peterson tree & shrub guide, but I was thrown off by the endangered listing on the state plant list. There was quite a bit of it in this spot…

Well, that looks perfectly plausible to me! Keep in mind that those Heritage rankings (E,S1,S2, etc.) refer only to native occurrences of a species. Planted populations and populations that have escaped from cultivation don’t count. So yes, it’s possible to find some Heritage-listed species in good numbers where they have escaped or persisted. On the other hand, maybe you have made a very good find of a native population. Where were these trees? Offhand, I think I’ve seen it in only two places in New Jersey.
