the stem is grooved…if so, should I pull it out by the roots?

    Yeah, that looks like a pretty good identication. A picture of the flowers or fruits or the whole plant would be better. Anyhow, by all means pull it out, though since it’s a biennial, if you mowed it for a couple of years you would most likely get rid of it. But wear gloves, and don’t let the juice of the plant get on your skin. It has the property of sensitizing your skin to sunlight, so parsnip juice + sunlight + skin = sunburn. The plant is mildly invasive. I don’t see it at all in South Jersey, even though it’s abundant in North Jersey.
