since I have yet to see this in NJ, I am very excited to have found it in the coastal Northeast.. along an open space bordering a forest…..and why the color variation

    Wow! I’ve never seen that one in New Jersey either. Though I have seen it in other places, including Maine. It’s small purple fringed orchis, Platanthera psycodes. The white is just a color form (I’ve seen that in Maine also). This kind of “albinism” can occur in any species; some defect occurs in one of the many steps that go into producing pigment, and the result is a white flower. Very nice!
